COURSE CURRICULUM

The Product Design and Technology BSc (Hons) degree provides students with a comprehensive education in both the creative and technical aspects of product design, combining design thinking, engineering principles, and applied research. In the first year, students develop foundational skills through modules such as Prototyping for Manufacture, Design at SDCA, Understanding People, Mechanical Principles for Product Design, Introduction to Digital Fabrication for Design, Electronics, Programming and Interfacing, and Augmented Reality Prototyping. These courses introduce students to practical design techniques, digital tools, and human-centered approaches, preparing them for more advanced study. In the second year, students build on these skills with modules including Design Communication, Design for Manufacture, Applied Mechanics, Materials and Sustainability, New Product Development, and Studio Product Design, while continuing to integrate electronics and programming into design practice. Optional modules allow exploration of areas such as arts management, creative activism, fashion, generative AI, and storytelling for creative industries. The third year focuses on applying knowledge to real-world projects through Live Projects and the Final Year Design Practice, with additional modules in Applications of Mechanics and Electronics for Design. Students may also select optional modules in Sustainable Design, Research for Design, Computer-Aided Modelling and Manufacture, or Automated Design and Manufacturing. Throughout the course, students gain experience in prototyping, problem-solving, and ethical, sustainable, and inclusive design, preparing them for careers in product design, engineering, innovation, and related creative industries.
