COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Criminology degree provides students with a comprehensive understanding of crime, its causes, and the social contexts in which it occurs, while developing key research and analytical skills. In the first year, students explore the fundamentals of criminology alongside qualitative and quantitative research methods, as well as subjects such as crime and social welfare, social policy, and the criminal justice system. Optional modules, including global social change and gaming cultures, allow for a broader perspective on societal influences. In the second year, the course builds on this foundation with advanced research methods, criminological theory, and crime prevention, while examining topics such as intoxication, punishment, and the experiences of women in the criminal justice system. Students also have opportunities to explore political psychology, critical security studies, and career preparation, further enhancing their understanding of the wider social and legal landscape. The final year focuses on independent research through a criminology dissertation, alongside compulsory modules such as youth justice and rehabilitation and recovery. Optional modules, including forensic psychology, violence and violent crime, and social inequalities, enable students to deepen their expertise in specialised areas. Overall, the degree equips graduates with critical thinking, research, and communication skills necessary for careers in criminal justice, policy, social research, and related fields.
