COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Chemistry program at LJMU provides a comprehensive education in chemical science, combining theoretical knowledge with extensive practical experience to develop well-rounded graduates. In the first year, students build foundational skills through Laboratory and Computer Skills 1, Fundamentals of Physical Chemistry, Fundamental Synthetic Chemistry, Spectroscopy and Analysis 1, Energetics and Equilibria 1, and Structure and Reactivity 1, establishing essential laboratory techniques, analytical methods, and chemical understanding. The second year deepens this knowledge with Laboratory and Skills 2, Structural Characterisation, Spectroscopy and Analysis, Thermodynamics, Kinetics and Quanta, Structure and Reactivity 2, Further Topics in Chemistry, and Computing Skills, allowing students to explore chemical properties, reaction mechanisms, and computational methods. In the final year, students focus on research and advanced topics through Investigative Projects, Modern Aspects of Organic Chemistry, Science Communication, Current Trends in Inorganic Chemistry, and Energy, Molecules and Applications, with optional modules such as Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis and Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism enabling specialisation. Throughout the program, students gain hands-on experience in state-of-the-art laboratories, develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills, and learn to communicate scientific concepts effectively. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in research, industry, healthcare, environmental management, and education, or for further postgraduate study, contributing to solutions for global challenges in chemistry and related fields.
