COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Chemistry with Computing program at LJMU integrates core chemistry knowledge with essential computing and data science skills, preparing students for modern scientific and industrial environments. In the first year, students develop foundational laboratory and computational skills alongside essential chemistry topics, including Fundamentals of Physical Chemistry, Fundamental Synthetic Chemistry, Spectroscopy and Analysis 1, Energetics and Equilibria 1, and Structure and Reactivity 1, providing a strong basis in experimental techniques, analytical methods, and chemical theory. In the second year, students advance their expertise through Laboratory and Computer Skills 2, Structural Characterisation, Spectroscopy and Analysis, Thermodynamics, Kinetics and Quanta, Structure and Reactivity 2, Computer Programming, and Computing Skills, enabling the application of computational tools to chemical problems and the development of problem-solving and data analysis capabilities. The final year focuses on integrating chemistry with computing in Investigative Computational Projects, Data, Algorithms and Numerical Optimisation, Modern Aspects of Organic Chemistry, Science Communication, Current Trends in Inorganic Chemistry, and Energy, Molecules and Applications, fostering advanced research and practical application skills. Throughout the program, students gain experience in state-of-the-art laboratories and computational environments, develop analytical thinking and programming proficiency, and enhance their ability to communicate scientific concepts. Graduates are equipped for careers in research, industry, data-driven science, computational chemistry, and further postgraduate study, bridging chemistry and modern computing technologies.
