COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biological Sciences program at LJMU provides a thorough and integrated study of life sciences, combining theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory experience. In the first year, students develop foundational understanding through modules such as Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Human Evolution and Adaptation, Anatomy and Physiology, Laboratory Skills 1, and Academic Skills and Data Description, establishing the core principles of biology and scientific practice. The second year builds on this foundation with modules including Cellular Signalling and Transport, Research Methods: Data Analysis, Laboratory Skills II, Genomics, and Growth, Development and Ageing, alongside optional modules such as Interdisciplinary Science, Human Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, Clinical Biochemistry and Biomarker Science, and Physiology of Exercise and Training, allowing students to explore specialised topics in health and molecular biology. In the final year, students complete an independent Project to develop research and analytical skills, while optional modules such as Body Composition and Physiological Measurement, Physiology of Exercise and Health, Sport and Exercise Nutrition, Applied Physiology of Sport Performance, Public and Global Health, Cellular Adaptation and Degeneration, Applied Genomics, Regenerative Medicine, and Cancer Biology provide opportunities to specialise and deepen expertise. Across the program, students acquire critical thinking, laboratory, and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in biological research, healthcare, biotechnology, or further postgraduate study, with a strong grounding in the mechanisms underlying life and human health.
