COURSE CURRICULUM

The Materials Science and Engineering degree at Loughborough University provides a structured and in-depth study of materials, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules in engineering principles and design, thermofluids, mathematics for materials, introductory materials science, experimentation and practical skills, and computer-aided engineering. This ensures they develop both the scientific understanding and technical skills required for the field. The second year focuses on more advanced topics such as materials processing, structures and characterisation, materials in action, data analysis and modelling, and group design projects, with optional modules in machine elements, automotive materials, composite materials, biomaterials, and vehicle development and electrification. This year emphasizes applying knowledge to real-world problems and developing design and analytical skills. In the final year, students explore advanced principles of materials, advanced processing methods, nanomaterials, functional materials, sustainability, recycling and environment, and industrial case studies, while optional modules allow for specialisation in areas such as biomedical component design, vehicle and component design, and biomaterials for drug delivery. The course culminates in a major project, providing an opportunity for independent research and practical application of learned skills. Graduates leave equipped for careers in materials development, engineering, research and development, and related industries, or for further postgraduate study.
