COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemical Engineering degree at LJMU offers a comprehensive and applied approach to the study of process engineering, combining scientific principles with practical skills and industrial relevance. In the first year, students establish foundational knowledge through modules such as Mathematical Methods in Chemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering Science, Engineering Principles and Design, Process Balances, Thermofluids, and Transfer Processes, developing analytical, problem-solving, and technical skills. The second year builds on this foundation with Advanced Thermodynamics and Reaction Engineering, Advanced Fluid Mechanics and Particle Technology, Chemical Engineering Separations, Process Safety and Control, Process Simulation and Design, and Data Analysis and Modelling, enabling students to design and optimise chemical processes and understand the theoretical and practical aspects of industrial operations. In the final year, students consolidate their expertise through compulsory modules including Advanced Transfer Processes, Reaction Engineering II, Process Economics and Project Management, Environmental Protection and Pollution Control, Individual and Team Process Design Projects, and Chemical Process Control, while optional modules such as Water Resources, Sustainability and Climate Change, Biochemical Engineering, Circular Economy, Healthcare Engineering, and Polymer Engineering allow for specialisation. Throughout the program, students gain hands-on experience in laboratory experiments, simulations, and design projects, developing critical thinking, project management, and technical skills. Graduates are prepared for diverse careers in industries including energy, materials, pharmaceuticals, environmental management, and process design, equipped to address modern engineering challenges and innovate sustainably.
