COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bioengineering and Biomaterials degree at LJMU provides an interdisciplinary education that combines engineering principles, materials science, and biomedical applications, preparing students for careers in healthcare, regenerative medicine, and advanced product development. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules such as Design and Make Project 1, Chemical Engineering Science, Mathematical Methods in Bioengineering, Introductory Materials Science, Anatomy and Physiology, and Integrated Product Design, developing core analytical, technical, and design skills. The second year advances these skills with Design and Make Project 2, Bioengineering Thermofluids, Data Analysis and Modelling, Digital Systems, Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Materials Characterisation, and Biomaterials 1, which introduces the use of biomaterials for tissue engineering. The third year focuses on independent research and applied learning through the Bioengineering Individual Project and Biomedical Component Design, complemented by modules in Data Analysis, Product Innovation Management, and Healthcare Engineering. Optional modules, including Body Composition and Physiological Measurement, Biochemical Engineering, Bioelectricity and Biophotonics Engineering, Additive Manufacturing for Product Development, Biomaterials 2, Regenerative Medicine, Emerging Technologies for Sport, Health and Wellbeing, and Sports Engineering, allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests. Throughout the program, students gain practical experience, problem-solving skills, and research expertise, equipping them to innovate and contribute effectively to the evolving fields of bioengineering and biomaterials.
