COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biomaterials Engineering degree at LJMU offers a comprehensive program that integrates materials science with biomedical applications, preparing students for careers in healthcare, regenerative medicine, and related industries. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge through modules such as Engineering Principles and Design, Mathematics for Materials, Thermofluids, Experimentation and Practical Skills, Introductory Materials Science, and Computer Aided Engineering, providing essential analytical and technical skills. The second year builds on this foundation with Data Analysis and Modelling, Group Design Project, Structures and Characterisation, Materials in Action, Materials Processing, Anatomy and Physiology 1, and Biomaterials 1, which focuses on biomaterials for tissue engineering, allowing students to understand material behaviour within biological contexts. In the final year, students complete a project and study Biomedical Component Design, Sustainability, Recycling and Environment, Nanomaterials, and Industrial Case Studies, with additional biomaterials modules covering drug delivery applications. Optional modules such as Advanced Principles of Materials, Advanced Processing Methods, Composite Materials, Functional Materials, and Entrepreneurship and Innovation allow further specialisation. Throughout the program, students gain hands-on experience in material testing, design, and analysis, while developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and research skills. Graduates emerge with the expertise to contribute to innovation in biomaterials, medical devices, and regenerative technologies, equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical industry-relevant experience.
