COURSE CURRICULUM

The Automotive Materials degree at Loughborough University provides a comprehensive education in materials science and engineering, tailored specifically to the automotive sector. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules such as Engineering Principles and Design, Mathematics for Materials, Thermofluids, Experimentation and Practical Skills, Introductory Materials Science, and Computer Aided Engineering, equipping them with essential analytical, design, and technical abilities. The second year develops applied knowledge with modules including Data Analysis and Modelling, Group Design Project, Structures and Characterisation, Materials in Action, Materials Processing, Machine Elements and Automotive Materials, and Vehicle Loading and Suspensions, giving students the opportunity to explore how materials perform under real-world automotive conditions. In the final year, students focus on advanced topics such as Sustainability, Recycling and Environment, Vehicle and Component Design, Automotive Crash Protection, Advanced Processing Methods, and Industrial Case Studies, while completing an individual project to apply their learning in a practical context. Optional modules such as Advanced Principles of Materials, Nanomaterials, Composite Materials, Functional Materials, and Entrepreneurship and Innovation allow students to specialise and broaden their expertise.
