COURSE CURRICULUM

The Automotive Engineering program at Loughborough University provides a comprehensive education in modern vehicle design, performance, and systems, preparing students for careers in the rapidly evolving automotive industry. In the first year, students build a foundation through modules including Mathematics for Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering, Materials and Structures, Thermofluids, Computing, Engineering Design and Manufacture, Vehicle Systems and Development, and Engineering Mechanics and Structures, establishing essential analytical and technical skills. The second year focuses on applied engineering and vehicle-specific studies, including Structural Design Project, Engineering Mathematics 3, Dynamics and Vibration, Systems Reliability Assessment, Incompressible Aerodynamics, Mechanics of Materials, Machine Elements and Automotive Materials, Vehicle Loading and Suspensions, Control Engineering, Advanced Powertrain Systems, Electrotechnology, and Automotive Sensor Technologies. This combination of modules equips students with knowledge of both mechanical and electronic aspects of vehicles, as well as emerging technologies. In the final year, students undertake the BEng Project and Concept Vehicle Definition, enabling independent research and design innovation. Optional modules such as Vehicle Dynamics and Simulation, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Noise Control, Crashworthiness, Ground Vehicle Aerodynamics, Battery Technology, and Machine Intelligence allow further specialisation. Across all three years, the program blends theoretical understanding with practical application, ensuring graduates develop the skills and expertise required to innovate, optimise, and contribute effectively to the automotive sector.
