COURSE CURRICULUM

The Politics and International Relations degree provides a comprehensive understanding of political systems, global affairs, and contemporary issues, combining theoretical study with practical research skills. In the first year, students establish a foundation through compulsory modules such as Academic Foundations in International Relations, Politics and History, The Contemporary World Arena, Power, Politics and Ideology in Modern Europe, International Political Theory, The Making and Unmaking of the World Order, and Politics and Government. Optional modules allow exploration of topics including economic and political geography, African American culture, global history, identities, inequalities, film, and art, while language study develops cross-cultural communication skills. In the second year, students deepen their analytical capabilities with core modules in Theories and Methods in Political Research and Research Design, alongside options covering globalization, social difference, security studies, politics of development, small wars, and historical perspectives on global politics. The third year focuses on independent research through a dissertation and offers a broad range of optional modules, including contemporary political philosophy, international conflict, terrorism, environmental thought, feminist philosophy, anarchism, and regional studies of Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and South Asia. Students also explore issues of race, gender, and social inequality, while continuing language development. This structure equips graduates with critical thinking, research, and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in government, international organizations, policy, media, and further academic study.
