COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Industrial Design degree provides a comprehensive education in designing innovative and future-oriented products. In the first year, students build foundational skills through modules such as Design at SDCA, Design Contexts, Understanding People, Prototyping for Industrial Design, Signs and Meanings, Interactions and Experiences, and Experiential Futures. These modules introduce students to the core principles of design, user interaction, and the cultural and societal contexts that influence product development, while emphasizing prototyping and hands-on experimentation. In the second year, the focus shifts toward professional practice and technical skills, with compulsory modules including Digital Modelling Tools 1 and 2, Design for Rapid Manufacture, New Product Development, Shaping Technologies in Society, Studio Product Design, and Design Communication. These modules prepare students for real-world applications, industry practice, and the creation of professional portfolios, while optional modules allow for creative exploration in areas such as fashion, storytelling, arts management, and AI in design. The final year centers on complex, applied projects, including Live Projects and the IDMP Industrial Design Major Project, alongside optional modules in Sustainable Design, Research for Design, Inclusive Design, Computer-Aided Modelling and Manufacture, and Automated Design & Manufacturing. This combination equips students with the practical, conceptual, and technical expertise required to succeed as forward-thinking industrial designers capable of creating innovative, user-focused, and sustainable products.
