COURSE CURRICULUM

The History and International Relations BA (Hons) degree offers a comprehensive exploration of historical and political studies, providing students with a deep understanding of past and contemporary global issues. In the first year, students engage with core modules such as Academic Foundations in International Relations, Politics and History, The Atlantic World from the 15th century, and Power, Politics & Ideology in Modern Europe, alongside optional modules in areas like economic and political geography, identities and inequalities, and African American culture. The curriculum also introduces art and visual culture, historical methods, and international political theory, while allowing flexibility through optional modules in film, global change, and social and cultural studies. The second year focuses on the development of research and analytical skills, including a compulsory module on Nation and Empire in British history, with optional modules covering topics such as the history of political thought, modern China, African states, and small wars, alongside courses on globalization, social difference, and critical security studies. In the final year, students undertake a dissertation and may select from a wide range of optional modules, exploring subjects including culture and politics in the age of anxiety, American and Soviet history, international relations, war in the 21st century, post-colonial studies, social inequality, race and gender, and anarchism, enabling a tailored and in-depth study of global historical and political issues.
