COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) History and Politics degree offers a well-structured program that combines core knowledge with flexible optional modules, enabling students to develop expertise across both disciplines. In the first year, students build strong academic foundations through core modules in international relations, politics and history, including subjects such as the Atlantic World, international political theory, and the study of political systems. Optional modules, including European political ideologies, the making and unmaking of the world order, and opportunities to study languages, allow for early specialisation. In the second year, the curriculum deepens with compulsory modules on political research methods and British history, alongside research design training. A wide choice of optional modules covers diverse global and thematic topics such as modern China, African states before and after colonialism, British India, modern Germany, US politics, political thought, capitalism and democracy, gender in global politics, and even creative options like the politics of Star Wars or political simulations. The final year is centred on an independent dissertation, allowing students to conduct in-depth research on a topic of choice, supported by a rich selection of advanced modules, including Soviet security, Asia-Pacific politics, environmental thought, terrorism, feminist philosophy, anarchism, and international conflict management.
