COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) History and International Relations degree provides a comprehensive and integrated study of both disciplines, combining historical depth with contemporary political analysis. In the first year, students develop strong academic foundations through modules exploring the Atlantic World, modern European politics, international political theory, and the principles of history, with options to study global order and participate in the University-wide Language program. The second year builds on this with a focus on research methods and political theory, alongside historical studies such as nation and empire, modern China, and African states before and after colonialism. Students also explore key political themes through modules on security, development, small wars, and political thought, while gaining career preparation opportunities. The final year allows students to demonstrate independent scholarship through a dissertation and specialise further with optional modules on diverse topics such as American culture, the Soviet security state, politics of terrorism, environmental thought, the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and international conflict management. Across the program, students engage with historical sources, political theories, and case studies, developing critical analytical and research skills. This joint honours degree prepares graduates for careers requiring expertise in global politics, history, and international relations, as well as for further academic study.
