COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Geography degree offers a structured yet flexible pathway that combines compulsory training with a wide variety of optional modules to suit individual interests. In the first year, students develop academic and professional skills while gaining a strong foundation in both human and physical geography through modules such as economic and political geography, social and cultural geography, earth system science, environmental hazards, cartography, and GIS. They also have the option to study a language. In the second year, students select a research design module in either human or physical geography and choose from a range of core subjects that include remote sensing and GIS, globalization, social difference, earth surface processes, and environmental resource management. Optional modules provide opportunities to explore urban geographies, river science, fieldwork, global migration, and environmental sustainability, while career preparation and language study remain available. The final year emphasizes independent research through a compulsory dissertation, allowing students to apply their skills to a topic of their choice. Additional optional modules include specialist areas such as climate change, conservation, glacial and dryland environments, housing, education, diaspora, and rural futures, as well as advanced fieldcourses. This balance of structure and choice enables students to tailor their studies while developing strong analytical and research skills.
