COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA English with Creative Writing degree combines the study of literature with practical creative writing, allowing students to develop their own original texts while engaging with the work of other writers. In the first year, students explore foundational concepts in narrative, drama, and poetry through compulsory modules such as Introduction to Drama, Narrative Forms, Analysing Poetry, and Elephants and Engines: An Introduction to Creative Writing. Optional modules provide opportunities to broaden knowledge and develop additional skills. In the second year, students expand their understanding of literature and creative practice through compulsory modules like Maps and Motors, while also selecting from optional modules including Victorian Literature, Modernisms, Screen Cultures, and literature from diverse cultural and historical perspectives. The course emphasizes flexibility, enabling students to tailor their studies to their personal interests and career goals. In the final year, students undertake a dissertation to develop independent research and critical analysis skills, while completing creative writing modules such as Driving On: Writing Towards Publication. Additional optional modules allow students to explore areas such as Neo-Victorianism, adapting Shakespeare, and writing on social, cultural, and historical topics. This combination of creative practice and literary study equips graduates with strong writing, analytical, and transferable skills for careers in publishing, media, education, and the creative industries.
