COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA English Literature program offers a broad and flexible curriculum that allows students to explore literature across historical periods while tailoring their studies to individual interests. In the first year, students engage with core modules such as Writing in History, Introduction to Drama, Narrative Forms, Analysing Poetry, and Theory Matters: Critiquing Inequalities, developing essential skills in literary analysis, close reading, and critical thinking. Optional modules in the first year, including Slavery to Black Lives Matter, Gaming Cultures, Introduction to Film, and creative writing, allow students to explore interdisciplinary connections and contemporary issues in literature and culture. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge through optional modules covering Victorian literature, Stuart-era literature, queer studies, modernisms, contemporary literature, screen cultures, and thematic studies such as animal narratives, providing a wide range of specialisations. The third year culminates in a compulsory dissertation, offering students the opportunity to undertake independent research and develop advanced analytical and writing skills. Additional optional modules include topics such as American crime culture, modern poetry, medicine and literature, Shakespeare adaptations, neo-Victorian literature, women’s writing, and professional writing practice. Across the course, students gain a strong foundation in literary history, theory, and interpretation, preparing them for careers in publishing, education, research, media, and creative industries.
