COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English and Sport Science degree offers a distinctive combination of literary study and sport science, providing students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. In the first year, students explore foundational modules in sport and exercise science, physical education, and social aspects of sport, alongside core English modules such as narrative forms, drama, and writing in history. This dual approach introduces students to the critical analysis of literature and the study of human movement and health, fostering an understanding of social inequalities and effective teaching methods. In the second year, students build on these foundations through modules in reflective practice in physical education, sport diversity, conceptualising sport, and advanced literature studies, including Victorian literature, modernisms, and queer identities in literature. Optional modules also allow exploration of film, media, and health-focused physical activity studies, preparing students for careers in both academic and applied contexts. The final year emphasizes research and applied learning, with options such as dissertations, contemporary issues in sporting cultures, applied sports science, sport policy, and governance, as well as advanced literary studies including neo-Victorianism, adaptations of Shakespeare, and modern poetry. This integrated program equips graduates with interdisciplinary skills, critical thinking, and practical experience, enabling diverse career opportunities in sport, health, education, and the creative arts.
