COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Design (Hons) program is structured to provide students with a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary education in design, combining creativity, technical skills, and critical thinking. In the first year, students focus on foundational design skills through modules such as Prototyping for Design, Design at SDCA, Design Contexts, Understanding People, Signs and Meanings, Interactions and Experiences, Applied Storytelling for Sustainability, and Experiential Futures. These modules encourage exploration of design principles, user experience, and sustainable practices while developing analytical and communication skills. The second year expands on these foundations, introducing Digital Skills for Design alongside Shaping Materials for Products, Experiences and Environments, Understanding People 2, Shaping Technologies in Society, and Speculative Futures. Optional modules allow students to explore specialized interests including arts management, responsible design practice, creative dissent, fashion, story design, and the ethics of generative AI, fostering an adaptive and exploratory mindset. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through the BA Design Showcase Project and Live Projects, which provide opportunities for practical application and industry engagement. Optional modules such as Design for Impact, Inclusive Design, Sustainable Design, Research for Design, Computer Aided Modelling and Manufacture, and Automated Design & Manufacturing enable students to refine their expertise in areas aligned with personal and professional goals, preparing them to enter the design industry as innovative, versatile, and socially responsible practitioners.
