ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Loughborough University, often abbreviated as Lough or Lboro, is a public research university located in the market town of Loughborough, Leicestershire, England. While it gained full university status in 1966, its roots trace back to 1909 with the founding of the Loughborough Technical Institute. Over the decades, the institution expanded significantly, driven by leaders such as Herbert Schofield and Herbert Haslegrave, transforming it from a provincial college into the first British technical university. During World War I, the institute played a critical role as an “instructional factory,” training workers for the munitions industry, while in its early years it also tried to emulate Oxbridge traditions, including students wearing gowns to lectures. Following the war, the institution divided into four separate colleges: Loughborough Training College, Loughborough College of Art, Loughborough College of Further Education, and Loughborough College of Technology, the latter forming the core of today’s university. It further evolved through mergers, including with Loughborough College of Education in 1977 and Loughborough College of Art and Design in 1998. The present-day university has established itself as a leading UK institution, known for blending practical training with academic excellence. In March 2013, it expanded its presence by acquiring the former broadcast centre at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, creating a second campus. For the 2023–24 academic year, the university reported an income of £363.2 million, including £47.8 million from research grants and contracts, against an expenditure of £251.6 million. In 2024, it was ranked ninth nationally for undergraduate education, further consolidating its reputation as a top-tier institution in the UK higher education landscape.
