COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Work MA at LSBU is structured over two years to provide a comprehensive foundation in both theory and practice for aspiring social workers. In the first year, students focus on developing readiness for direct practice, learning the core methods and theories that underpin professional social work. They explore human growth and development, gain an understanding of relevant laws for social work, and examine social policy to contextualize their practice. Practical experience is introduced through the first practice placement, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings and develop essential professional skills. In the second year, the program deepens students’ expertise with a focus on social work with adults and social work with children, young people, and families, preparing them to respond effectively to diverse client needs. The second practice placement provides further applied experience, consolidating skills in assessment, intervention, and professional decision-making. Students also undertake a limited systematic review dissertation, which develops research literacy and the ability to critically evaluate evidence to inform practice. Throughout the course, students are guided by experienced practitioners and academic staff, ensuring a balance of practical learning, theoretical insight, and professional development. Graduates leave equipped to register with Social Work England and pursue careers across a range of social work settings, ready to make a meaningful impact in the lives of individuals, families, and communities.
