COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Urban Design and Planning program offers a comprehensive study of urban design, planning, and development, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical application. Students explore core concepts in planning, politics, and urban theory, developing an understanding of how governance, policy, and societal factors influence the built environment. The course examines the making of place, enabling students to analyse how urban spaces are shaped and experienced, while emphasising the importance of creating functional, resilient, and aesthetically engaging environments. Through modules on design and property development, students gain insights into the economic and strategic aspects of urban projects, learning how to balance design creativity with commercial feasibility. Sustainable places are explored in depth, addressing environmental, social, and economic challenges to ensure urban development is responsible and future-focused. Practical design skills are developed through urban design modules that bridge theory and practice, allowing students to work on real-world projects and proposals at varying scales. The program culminates in a major project or dissertation, encouraging independent research, critical analysis, and innovative problem-solving.
