COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Criminology program is structured over three years to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of crime, criminal justice, and social responses. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge through modules such as Deconstructing the Crime Problem, Introduction to the Criminal Justice System, Social Science in the Contemporary World, Issues in Crime, Understanding Crime: Criminological Theory in Context, and Social Justice in Action. These modules introduce key concepts, theories, and social frameworks, encouraging critical thinking about crime, law, and justice. The second year focuses on research skills and applied understanding, with core modules such as Social Research Methods and Working in the Social Sciences, alongside optional modules covering topics like prisons, policy-making, environmental justice, policing, youth crime, and political ideologies. This year allows students to explore specialised areas and develop analytical and research competencies. In the third year, students undertake an extended Research Project, while also studying Gender, Crime and Justice, Contemporary Criminology, and optional modules including Race, Culture and Identity, Crimes of the Powerful, International Security, Diplomacy and Conflict, and the impact of emerging technologies on society. Throughout the program, students integrate theoretical study with practical analysis, preparing them to critically evaluate crime and justice issues. Graduates leave equipped for careers in criminal justice, law enforcement, policy-making, social research, and related fields, with the skills to navigate and address complex societal challenges.
