COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Urban and Environmental Planning program is structured over three years to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of town planning, sustainable development, and urban regeneration. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge through modules such as Development Management, Making Sustainable Places, Plans, People and Processes, Planning History and Principles, Society, Space and Place, and Geographical Investigations. These modules introduce students to the principles, processes, and social contexts of urban planning, while developing analytical and research skills. The second year focuses on more specialised areas, including Environmental Change: Issues and Impacts, Strategies, Visions and Design, Local Economic Development, Planning for Housing, and Geographies of Regeneration. A compulsory work experience placement provides students with real-world professional exposure, enhancing employability and practical understanding of planning practices in both public and private sectors. In the third year, students engage with advanced topics through modules such as Evidence-Based Planning, Real Estate Valuation, International Planning Perspectives, and Cities and Representations, culminating in a dissertation that allows independent research and critical analysis. Across the program, students develop the skills to evaluate, design, and implement planning strategies that address societal, environmental, and economic challenges. Graduates emerge well-prepared for careers in urban and environmental planning, policy-making, consultancy, and related sectors, equipped to contribute to sustainable and innovative urban development in a rapidly evolving world.
