COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Social Work program is structured over three years to provide a combination of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional development necessary for a career in social work. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules such as Methods and Theories for Social Work Practice, Readiness for Direct Practice, Human Growth and Development, Sociology for Social Work, Value and Ethics in Social Work, and Concepts of Interprofessional and Collaborative Practice. These modules introduce students to key concepts, ethical frameworks, and collaborative approaches essential for effective practice. The second year deepens this understanding with modules including Social Policy for Social Work, Law for Social Work, Communication and Collaborative Working, and Appraising Evidence for Research-Informed Practice, alongside the first Practice Learning Opportunity. These modules provide practical experience and enhance skills in assessment, intervention, and professional communication. In the third year, students focus on specialised areas such as Social Work with Children, Young People and Families, Social Work with Adults, Risk, Resilience and Decision Making in Social Work, and complete a Social Work Literature Review, alongside the second Practice Learning Opportunity. This structure allows students to integrate theoretical knowledge with applied practice, developing critical thinking, ethical judgment, and professional competence. Graduates leave the program prepared to work effectively in diverse social work settings, supporting individuals, families, and communities while promoting wellbeing and positive social change.
