ABOUT UNIVERSITY

London South Bank University (LSBU) is a public university located in Elephant and Castle, London, within the Borough of Southwark near the River Thames. Established in 1892 as the Borough Polytechnic Institute, it aimed to promote industrial skills, general knowledge, and well-being among young people. Over time, it evolved through several name changes, becoming the Polytechnic of the South Bank in 1970, South Bank Polytechnic in 1987, South Bank University in 1992, and finally London South Bank University in 2003. The institution expanded through numerous mergers, including the Brixton School of Building, Battersea College of Education, and South West London College, which strengthened its focus on engineering, health, and education. During both World Wars, the Polytechnic contributed to the national effort through training and production activities. The post-war era saw major expansions in facilities and student numbers, with new buildings such as the National College Wing and Tower Block. The university developed strong ties with industry, emphasizing vocational and professional education. In the late 20th century, under leaders like Pauline Perry and Gerald Bernbaum, LSBU gained university status and began offering research degrees. The 21st century brought further modernization, including new facilities like the Keyworth Centre, K2 building, Student Centre, and Elephant Studios. In 2016, LSBU was named Entrepreneurial University of the Year and received a Silver rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework. Under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Dave Phoenix since 2014, the university has continued to expand, supporting initiatives like the University Academy of Engineering South Bank and planning a merger with Lambeth College. Today, LSBU serves over 16,000 students with a strong reputation for practical learning, research innovation, and commitment to community and enterprise.
