COURSE CURRICULUM

The Jewellery and Silversmithing MA includes a flexible structure of core modules designed to support advanced practice-based learning and research in design. The program features a portfolio of alternative 20-credit Level 7 modules, from which two core modules are selected each academic year by the course team prior to the start of the program in September. The selection is based on available project opportunities and the overall balance of students across different MA design courses within the school. As a result, students do not choose these core modules themselves, ensuring a shared and structured learning experience across cohorts. The available modules include Design Research for Practice, which develops students’ ability to investigate and apply research within their creative work; Design Project Development, which supports the progression of ideas into resolved design outcomes; Charismatic Objects, which explores the cultural and emotional significance of designed objects; Design for Change, which focuses on using design to address social and environmental challenges; and Project as Professional Practice: Jewellery and Silversmithing, which connects academic study with real-world professional contexts in the field. Together, these modules provide a strong foundation in research, experimentation, and professional practice, enabling students to develop a reflective, innovative, and socially aware approach to jewellery and silversmithing design.
