COURSE CURRICULUM

The Interpreting MA includes a structured set of modules designed to develop advanced professional interpreting skills, theoretical understanding, and practical experience for work in international and public service settings. Consecutive interpreting (A into English or C2 into English) focuses on developing accuracy and fluency when interpreting spoken discourse from a foreign language into English. Consecutive interpreting (English into A, or C1 into English) builds skills in the reverse direction and strengthens linguistic control and memory techniques. Interpreting Theory and Interpreting Assignment Preparation Strategies explores the cognitive processes behind interpreting and provides methods for preparing effectively for assignments. Public Service Interpreting introduces students to interpreting in legal, medical, and community settings, emphasising accuracy, ethics, and cultural awareness. Simultaneous interpreting (A<>English, or C1 and C2 into English) develops real-time interpreting skills used in conferences and international organisations, requiring high concentration and speed. The Interpreter’s Professional Environment examines workplace expectations, professional ethics, and industry standards, helping students understand the demands of the interpreting profession. The MA Research Project allows students to undertake independent academic research on a topic related to interpreting practice or theory. Together, these modules build the linguistic, cognitive, and professional competencies required for successful careers as conference or public service interpreters in global and multilingual environments.
