COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology (including foundation year) BSc (Hons) at London Metropolitan University provides a structured pathway into the study of society, inequality, and social change. The foundation year supports students in developing essential academic skills and confidence before progressing to degree level study. In Year 1, students explore core sociological concepts through modules such as Constructing Modern Societies, Global Inequalities, Social Divisions, Introducing Social Policy, Researching Social Life, and Sociological Imagination, alongside themes of justice, protest, and environmental inequality. In Year 2, learning becomes more specialised with training in qualitative and quantitative research methods and deeper study of topics including gender and sexuality, racism and ethnicity, self and society, everyday life, youth culture, marginality, and contemporary social issues. Year 3 focuses on advanced theoretical understanding and independent research, with modules such as Sociological Dissertation, Living Theory, and Conversations in Sociological Thought, as well as applied topics like homelessness, human rights, religion, global policy, and community empowerment. Across the program, students develop analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, enabling them to understand complex social problems and contribute to academic, policy, and community-based careers with strong emphasis on employability, research excellence, real world social engagement opportunities for professional development and practice.
