COURSE CURRICULUM

The Media and Communications (including foundation year) BSc (Hons) program is structured over four years, starting with a foundation year that introduces students to key media practices and creative skills. In Year 0, students explore modules such as Making News for TV, Media Contexts, Pop, Pulp and Politics, and Studio Craft subjects including filmmaking, music video production, InDesign, and Photoshop, alongside Writing for Media, building a strong creative and technical foundation. In Year 1, the focus shifts to core academic and practical areas, including Communication and Image, Media and Society, Media Genres, Media Histories, Digital Skills, Moving Image Practice, Sound Design, and Writing and Research Skills. Year 2 develops a deeper understanding of media industries and cultural contexts through modules such as Contemporary Television, Media and Communities, Nation, Migration and Media, Stardom and Celebrity, Visual Cultures, and Television Studio Practice, alongside practical and professional skills like digital project management and podcast production. In Year 3, students engage with advanced and specialised topics such as Media Power and Politics, Genders and Identities, Urban Media, and Researching Media Audiences, while completing a creative or research dissertation project. Additional modules support career development and practical expertise. Overall, the program equips students with creative, analytical, and professional skills for media-related careers.
