COURSE CURRICULUM

The Forensic Science BSc (Hons) with a foundation year at London Metropolitan University is designed to develop students’ scientific knowledge and practical skills progressively over four years. In Year 0, students build a solid grounding in biochemistry, biology, and chemistry, alongside completing a Foundation Year Project and developing broader scientific study skills, preparing them for the more specialized modules ahead. Year 1 introduces core subjects including anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, fundamentals of molecular biology, and an introduction to forensic science, supported by laboratory skills and professional studies, ensuring a balance of theory and practical experience. In Year 2, students focus on specialized forensic modules such as firearms, ammunition, and ballistics, marks and impression evidence, scene interpretation, microbiology, molecular biology, metabolism, and spectroscopic and bioanalytical methods, deepening their technical expertise and understanding of forensic investigations. The final year builds on this knowledge with advanced modules in bioanalytical science, forensic trace evidence, toxicology, genomics, medical genetics, and inferences from biological remains. Students also complete a research project, a practical project, and have the opportunity for a work placement in life sciences. Across all four years, the course integrates practical laboratory experience, critical analysis, and real-world applications, preparing students for professional careers in forensic science with confidence and competence.
