COURSE CURRICULUM

The Youth Studies BSc (Hons) at London Metropolitan University is a three-year degree designed to prepare students for professional work with young people and communities through a combination of theory, practice, and applied learning. In Year 1, students are introduced to foundational ideas through modules such as Cultures, Identity and Difference, Introduction to Working with Young People, Introduction to Communities, and The Anti-Oppressive Practitioner, which build understanding of social inequality, inclusion, and youth engagement. In Year 2, students expand their knowledge and practical skills through a wide range of modules including Principles and Practice of Youth Work, Researching Youth and Community Issues, The Reflexive and Reflective Practitioner, and Counselling in Youth and Community Settings, alongside topics such as Youth Culture and the Media, Crime and the Media, Disability and Inclusion, and Youth, Crime and Violence. This year also explores social issues like sustainability, transnational communities, and creative approaches to practice. In Year 3, students focus on advanced practice and professional development through modules such as Community and Youth Dissertation, Management and Supervision in Youth and Community Work Settings, Work Placement, Community Activism and Digital Campaigning, and International Relationship-Based Practice for Social Change. Additional topics include housing policy, social control, drugs and organised crime, and group counselling, preparing graduates for careers in youth work, community development, and social services.
