COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology and Sociology BSc (Hons) degree is structured over three years, combining the study of criminology with sociological analysis to examine crime within social, cultural, and political contexts. In Year 1, students develop foundational knowledge through modules such as Becoming a Criminologist, The Criminal Justice Framework, The Development of Criminological Thought, Traditional Criminological Theories and Concepts, alongside sociology-focused modules including Global Inequalities, Introducing Social Policy, Social Divisions, and Sociological Imagination. This year establishes a strong understanding of both crime and social structures. Year 2 expands into applied and contemporary topics, including Criminological Research in Context and Practice, Cybercrime and Surveillance, Youth in Modern Society, Understanding Racism and Ethnicity, Understanding Gender and Sexuality, Crimes of the Powerful, and Working with Offenders. Students also explore professional roles in the criminal justice system and develop research skills. In Year 3, the focus shifts to advanced and specialised areas, with modules such as the Criminology Project, Homelessness and Housing Policy, Human Rights and Conflict, Migration, Borders and Control, Organised Crime, Punishment and Prison, Serious and Serial Offenders, and Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism. Work-based learning opportunities allow students to apply their knowledge in practical settings. Overall, the program integrates theory, research, and practical experience, preparing graduates for careers in criminal justice, policing, social policy, and related sectors.
