COURSE CURRICULUM

The Early Childhood Studies BA (Hons) degree is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and professional understanding required to work in early childhood education and related fields. The program begins with a foundation year for those who need additional academic preparation, providing essential study skills and introducing students to broader themes such as identity, social justice, and inequality. In Year 1, students develop a strong grounding in children’s development and professional practice through modules such as Creative Representation through Play, Emerging Professional Identity, Exploring Perspectives on Children’s Development, Rocking the Crib, and Safeguarding, Health and Wellbeing. Year 2 focuses on applied learning and social awareness, with modules including Challenging Inequalities, Social Policy and Advocacy, Disrupting Narratives: Social Pedagogy in Early Childhood, Oral Stories and Literacy, Special Educational Needs, Disability and Inclusion, Sustainability in Early Childhood Communities, Consolidating Professional Identity, and a Professional Placement that provides real-world experience. In Year 3, students consolidate their learning and develop advanced professional capabilities through the Early Childhood Studies Project, Establishing Professional Identity, Leading Professional Practice, and International Perspectives of Children and Childhood. Across the program, students gain practical, theoretical, and reflective skills, preparing them to engage critically with contemporary issues in early childhood, lead professional practice, and pursue careers in education, childcare, social policy, and community development.
