COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Writing and English Literature BA (Hons) with foundation year is structured across four years, gradually developing students’ academic, analytical, and creative skills. In Year 0, the foundation stage introduces core concepts through modules such as Critical and Contextual Studies, Critical Creative Practice, and Introduction to Creative Genre and Criticism, alongside place-based learning in Writing London and observational writing. Year 1 builds on this base with a focus on literary history and form, including modules like Poetic Form and Genre, Romantics to Victorians, Theatre and Performance, and Writer’s World, encouraging students to explore different genres and historical contexts. In Year 2, students deepen their understanding of literary periods and practical writing skills through modules such as Genre Fiction, Victorians to Moderns, Writing and Editing Fiction and Nonfiction, Publishing and the Book, and The Writer’s Craft. By Year 3, the course emphasizes independent work and critical reflection, with modules including Moderns to Contemporaries, a major creative or research Project, Why Literature Matters, and continued study of publishing and writing craft. Overall, the program combines literary study with creative practice, preparing students for professional and academic pathways.
