COURSE CURRICULUM

The Critical and Contextual Studies: Foundation module introduces students to a wide range of cultural and contextual practices within art, architecture, design, and media, while helping them develop essential academic skills in reading, writing, research, and analysis. It is designed to prepare students for critical and theoretical work in higher education by encouraging them to ask meaningful questions and explore informed answers related to creative disciplines. The module is structured around a sequence of three key assessments, beginning with a patchwork assignment that includes a learning reflection, followed by an analysis of a selected creative practitioner, and concluding with a self-directed essay. Through these tasks, students engage with different forms of inquiry, ranging from practical and theoretical questions to personal reflection and structured academic writing. The course is delivered through two intensive thematic blocks, allowing exploration of topics such as contexts, connections, and themes in creative practice. Throughout the module, students build a portfolio of methodological and critical communication skills, gaining confidence in expressing ideas and engaging with creative work. It also helps students better understand their interests, strengths, and future study direction, equipping them with the skills needed for further academic progression.
