COURSE CURRICULUM

The Graphic Design BA (Hons) degree at London Metropolitan University is structured over three years to progressively develop students’ creative, technical, and professional skills in visual communication. In Year 1, students focus on foundational knowledge and practice through modules such as Critical and Contextual Studies 1, Message and Meaning, Skills and Principles, and Work Ready Level 4, providing essential skills in design thinking, visual analysis, and practical techniques. This stage emphasizes the development of a strong creative foundation while introducing students to professional expectations and collaborative working. In Year 2, the curriculum builds on this foundation with Critical and Contextual Studies 2, Skills and Enquiry, Voice and Vision, and Work Ready Level 5, encouraging deeper exploration of design concepts, personal creative voice, and applied problem-solving. Students are guided to develop more sophisticated work while continuing to engage with professional practice and industry-relevant challenges. In Year 3, students consolidate their learning and prepare for professional careers through Critical and Contextual Studies 3: Dissertation, the Major Project in Graphic Design, Skills and Innovation, and Work Ready Level 6. This final year emphasizes independent research, innovative design practice, portfolio development, and readiness for the creative industries. Across all three years, the program combines theoretical study, practical projects, and professional engagement, ensuring graduates leave with a strong portfolio, critical insight, and the skills needed to succeed in graphic design and visual communication roles.
