COURSE CURRICULUM

The Early Childhood Studies BA (Hons) degree provides students with a comprehensive understanding of child development, professional practice, and social contexts affecting children and families. In Year 1, students develop foundational knowledge and skills through modules such as Creative Representation through Play, Emerging Professional Identity, Exploring Perspectives on Children’s Development, Rocking the Crib, and Safeguarding, Health and Wellbeing, which focus on supporting children’s learning, safety, and wellbeing while beginning to build professional awareness. Year 2 emphasizes applied learning, critical reflection, and social responsibility, with modules including Challenging Inequalities, Social Policy and Advocacy, Consolidating Professional Identity, Disrupting Narratives: Social Pedagogy in Early Childhood, Oral Stories and Literacy, Professional Placement, Special Educational Needs, Disability and Inclusion, and Sustainability in Early Childhood Communities. These modules allow students to engage directly with professional environments, develop inclusive practice, and explore the broader societal and policy contexts that impact early childhood. In Year 3, students consolidate their learning and professional skills through the Early Childhood Studies Project, Establishing Professional Identity, Leading Professional Practice, and International Perspectives of Children and Childhood, fostering research competence, leadership abilities, and a global understanding of childhood. The degree combines theory, practice, and reflection, preparing graduates to work confidently and ethically in early childhood education, childcare, social policy, and related professional settings, supporting children, families, and communities.
