COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Writing and English Literature BA (Hons) degree is structured across three years, with each stage building students’ literary knowledge and creative skills. In Year 1, students are introduced to key literary forms and historical periods through modules such as Poetic Form and Genre, Romantics to Victorians, Theatre and Performance: History and Craft, and Writer’s World. These modules provide a foundation in both creative practice and critical analysis. In Year 2, the focus shifts towards developing more advanced writing and analytical abilities, with modules including Genre Fiction, Victorians to Moderns, Writing and Editing Fiction and Nonfiction, Publishing and the Book: then and now, and The Writer’s Craft. This stage emphasizes both creative production and an understanding of the publishing industry. By Year 3, students engage in more independent and specialized work, studying Moderns to Contemporaries and completing a major Project in Creative Writing and English Literature. Additional modules such as Why Literature Matters, along with continued study of publishing and writing craft, encourage deeper critical reflection and professional development. Overall, the course combines literary study with practical writing experience, preparing students for a variety of creative and professional careers.
