COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Urban Design is structured around core modules that integrate theory, research, and practice to prepare students for addressing the complex challenges of modern cities. The Final Major Project, worth 60 credits, forms the centrepiece of the program, giving students the opportunity to produce an independent and substantial body of work that demonstrates their creativity, research skills, and professional expertise in urban design. Sustainable Urban Design focuses on evaluating and developing sustainable communities, encouraging students to critically reflect on environmental, social, and cultural dimensions of design. Theory and Research 1 provides a strong foundation in theoretical studies and research methods, equipping students with the skills to investigate urban issues and apply evidence-based approaches to design. Urban Design 1 introduces creative urbanism and regeneration within both analytical and theoretical frameworks, encouraging innovative solutions to contemporary urban challenges. Practice and Legislation explores the role of the designer in today’s built environment, examining policy, regulation, and professional responsibilities. Together, these modules combine creative exploration, critical reflection, and practical knowledge, ensuring graduates are able to design inclusive, sustainable, and adaptable urban spaces while engaging with the wider cultural, social, and legislative contexts that shape the future of cities.
