COURSE CURRICULUM

The MArch program at Liverpool John Moores University incorporates a comprehensive and progressive set of core modules designed to develop both theoretical knowledge and practical design skills. In the first stage, Theory and Research 1 introduces students to key theoretical studies and research methods, providing a foundation for critical thinking and evidence-based design. Urban Design 1 focuses on creative urbanism and regeneration, exploring contemporary city challenges within an analytical and theoretical context, while Integrated Design 1 encourages students to develop architectural solutions that address resilient living and sustainability. The Practice and Legislation module ensures students understand the professional responsibilities of designers, including legal and regulatory frameworks in the contemporary built environment. In the second stage, Theory and Research 2 guides students through thesis studies, emphasizing critical writing and design research, while Urban Design 2 focuses on developing a coherent urban strategy as part of the thesis project. Integrated Design 2 allows students to translate their ideas into architectural design, progressing from concept to built form with a focus on innovation and practical application. Together, these modules cultivate a balance between research, theory, and creative architectural practice, preparing students to address complex design challenges, work independently, and apply their skills in professional and real-world contexts while fostering originality, technical competence, and critical thinking.
