COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Mass Communications at Liverpool John Moores University combines theoretical and practical approaches to understanding contemporary media and communication. The program’s core modules cover a broad spectrum of knowledge, beginning with Theories, Concepts and Debates in Mass Communications, which introduces students to key frameworks and critical perspectives within the field. Digital Cultures explores the evolving role of technology and digital media in shaping audience behaviour, communication practices, and cultural engagement. The Communications Practice module provides hands-on opportunities to apply theoretical concepts, developing practical skills in media production, content creation, and audience engagement. Research skills are developed through the Perspectives on Mass Communication Research Methods module, where students gain expertise in designing, conducting, and analysing research across multiple media contexts. The Mass Communications Dissertation allows students to undertake an independent, in-depth research project, synthesising theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and research methodology to investigate a topic of personal or professional interest. Together, these modules equip students with transferable skills including critical analysis, creative problem solving, ethical decision-making, and effective communication.
