COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Film program at LJMU is structured around a set of core modules that combine critical analysis with creative practice. Screening the City encourages students to examine the relationship between film and urban environments, exploring how cities are represented and experienced through cinema. People in Film focuses on the depiction of identity, culture and society, providing a deeper understanding of human experiences and their cinematic portrayals. Researching Film equips students with essential methodological and analytical skills, enabling them to conduct original research and apply theoretical frameworks to their work. Exploring Film Festivals, Distribution and Exhibition looks at the cultural and industrial mechanisms that shape how films reach audiences, offering valuable insights into the global film industry and its networks. The program culminates in the Final Project, a substantial piece of independent work where students can pursue a creative film production, a written dissertation, or a hybrid project that bridges theory and practice. Collectively, these modules foster a balance of critical thinking, research expertise and practical skills. By the end of the program, students are prepared to navigate both academic and professional contexts, gaining the ability to critically engage with film while also contributing to its creation and dissemination.
