COURSE CURRICULUM

The core modules of the MA in Exhibition Studies at LJMU are designed to provide students with a strong balance of theory, research, and practice in the field of contemporary exhibition-making. The Major Project (60 credits) forms the centerpiece of the program, allowing students to develop an independent, research-led project that demonstrates their critical understanding and practical skills in curatorial and exhibition studies. Research and Practice 1 (30 credits) introduces students to the theoretical and methodological foundations of exhibition histories and curatorial practices, while Research and Practice 2 (30 credits) builds on this by encouraging more advanced critical inquiry and applied research. Studio Practice (30 credits) gives students the opportunity to engage directly with exhibition-making processes, combining conceptual exploration with hands-on experimentation in developing innovative curatorial ideas. The Transdisciplinary Practice module (30 credits) broadens perspectives by encouraging collaboration across disciplines, reflecting the increasingly interconnected nature of exhibition and curatorial practices in the global arts landscape. Together, these modules foster the ability to critically evaluate exhibition formats, develop original research, and translate theory into practice, preparing graduates for roles in galleries, museums, biennials, cultural institutions, or further academic research in the field.
