COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Art in Science program at Liverpool John Moores University is structured around a set of core modules that develop both creative and research skills while exploring the intersection of art and science. The Studio Practice module provides students with hands-on experience to experiment with techniques, materials, and methods, encouraging the development of a personal artistic-scientific approach. The Major Project allows students to undertake an extended practice-based or practice-led research project, synthesising the knowledge, skills, and ideas acquired throughout the course into a coherent body of work. Transdisciplinary Practice focuses on collaboration and the integration of methods from multiple disciplines, helping students navigate and create connections across artistic and scientific domains. Critical Discourses encourages reflection on historical, theoretical, and contemporary debates surrounding art and science, fostering critical thinking and enabling students to contextualise their practice. The Research Inquiry module equips students with essential research skills, including methodologies, ethics, and analytical techniques, supporting the development of rigorous and original projects. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive framework that blends practical studio work, theoretical investigation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Graduates leave with the ability to produce innovative work, critically engage with art-science intersections, and pursue professional careers or further research where artistic creativity and scientific understanding converge.
