COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Zoology at Liverpool John Moores University offers a comprehensive program that combines theoretical knowledge with practical and applied experience, preparing students for careers in animal science, conservation, research, and related fields. In the first year, students build a solid foundation in ecology, genetics, evolution, animal behaviour, physiology, and fundamental scientific research, alongside practical skills for zoological study. The second year develops advanced knowledge in animal evolution, diversity, and comparative physiology, with optional modules including behavioural ecology, marine and freshwater biology, developmental biology, and genes and genomes. Students also have the opportunity to take a study abroad or sandwich placement year, gaining professional experience and applying their learning in real-world environments. In the third year, students complete a substantial research project and explore current topics in zoology while selecting from optional modules such as neurobiology, parasitology, animal welfare, zoo conservation, applied marine biology, animal learning and cognition, and advanced field skills expeditions. Work-based learning opportunities further allow students to develop professional competencies, including fieldwork, data analysis, and project management. The program emphasizes hands-on learning through laboratory work, field trips, and placements, equipping graduates with the expertise, research skills, and practical experience necessary to succeed in zoology, wildlife management, and environmental science professions.
