COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport Coaching degree at Liverpool John Moores University is designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise needed for a successful career in coaching. In the first year, students build a foundation in research methods, exercise physiology, human movement, psychosocial principles of sport and exercise, and professional practice in sport coaching, alongside developing their understanding of learning in physical education and sport contexts. The second year deepens these skills with advanced research methods, applied coaching practices, and specialist modules such as strength and conditioning for coaches and effective coaching in Paralympic and disability sport. Opportunities to study or work abroad further enhance practical experience and global perspectives. In the final year, students undertake a major project, explore critical challenges within coaching, and engage in applied placements to consolidate their practical skills. Additional modules focus on coach expertise, effectiveness, performance analysis, and interdisciplinary coaching science, allowing students to specialise according to their interests. The degree emphasises professional skill development, including communication, observation, and leadership, while fostering critical thinking and evidence-based coaching practice. By integrating theory, applied learning, and research, the program prepares graduates to work confidently in a variety of coaching contexts, including elite sport, community programs, schools, and disability or Paralympic sport, providing a strong foundation for career progression in the global sports industry.
