COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health) degree provides a structured three-year curriculum designed to develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in mental health nursing. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of nursing practice through modules such as professional values, person-centred care, partnership working, health promotion, and practice learning. These modules lay the groundwork for understanding the responsibilities of a nurse and the importance of collaborative, holistic care. The second year builds on this foundation with a stronger focus on interprofessional collaboration, health promotion policies, and the legal and ethical frameworks that shape nursing practice. Students also study assessment in mental health nursing and explore the complexities of providing care to individuals with diverse needs, while continuing to advance their practice learning. In the final year, the focus shifts towards leadership, professional development, and readiness for practice. Modules cover leadership and quality enhancement, health economics, prescriber readiness, and managing risk in mental health nursing. Students also develop advanced skills in person-centred care planning and consolidate their practical learning in preparation for professional registration. This progression equips graduates with the competence, confidence, and critical thinking skills necessary for effective practice in mental health nursing.
